An excellent book that is let down by outdated information.
Cisco Networking Essentials does a fantastic job covering the basic of practical networking with Cisco equipment. Unfortunately, what detracts from the confidence in the book's material is out of date recommendations and requirements that are no longer true.
The books goes on for pages discussing the differences between 10baseT and 100baseT networking, in an era when 100baseT is the lagging edge of networking and enterprises are building Gigabit and 10G fiber and copper networking.
Case in point, the text near Location 7609 on the Kindle edition insists that Cross-over cables are required for switch to switch connections. In Gigabit networks, there is no longer any "cross-over" considering that Gigabit is Fully Duplexed and Auto-sensing.
A sad state of affairs for an otherwise excellent book that purports to have been published less than a year ago.

Nice job, Troy. Your Introductions says that this book was designed to fill a gap that has existed for some time in today's technical training curricula. I agree that that gap has made it difficult for new entrants to the networking industry to become proficient in our field. Many of the topics and much of the jargon that we sling around without thinking is completely foreign to those who haven't slogged through the early Novell, WINNT and UNIX years.
Cisco Networking Essentials is a nice, tight compendium of indispensible topics for the network engineer. Covering subjects such as, The OSI Model, TCP/IP, Numbering Systems, Classful and Classless Addressing, Configuring Switches and Routers, as well as Static and Dynamic Routing, in a clear and intuitive manner. There is enough non-vendor oriented material in this book to warrant using it to provide a generic understanding of networking and enough Cisco specific information to allow a new administrator to understand how to apply the general topics to our Cisco gear.
I will be adding this book to my recommended reading list.
