Exploring Adobe InDesign CS6 Free Download
This book is one of the best beginner books I've ever used. The book takes you through very basic information through more complicated and more advanced projects. It's all explained in a step-by-step way and very easy to understand.
Not only does the author show you how to use the software he gears many of the lessons to show you about preparing your final artwork for the real-world production environment. A very important and practical component of the design process.
I would recommend this book for anyone serious about learning InDesign. It takes time to go through each chapter but if you follow through to the end you will have a very good understanding of the basics of InDesign, and a little more.
I've used many of the Adobe Classroom in a Book series. I've always liked them but I think they fall short compared to this book.
This book doesn't come with a CD for the project lessons. Instructions are given to log-on to their website and download all the files. The process is a little tedious and long but once you've downloaded all the files you're all set.

I have just completed all 14 chapters of this book, as a result, I feel comfortable with inDesign and the design process. The interior pages are in color. The instructions are step by step (except end of chapter assignments). Overall, this is an excellent book.
BOOK
This book teaches inDesign plus design principles. You will learn the HOW and the WHY. Whatever you learn in this book will be deeply embedded into your understanding of indesign. If you are studying independently (for your own enjoyment), I would recommend skipping the assignments at the end of each chapter. The problem with the end of chapter assignments is that they are designed for critical thinking (you have to FIGURE it out) and are not step by step instructions. But don't let that deter you. All throughout the book are step by step instructions!
PROJECT FILES
All project files are free but they must be downloaded from the publisher's web site.
Each Chapter must be downloaded individually (bummer).
You will need the following files:
"Artwork and Resources" zip file
"Student Handout" pdf file (possibly).
The Student Handout files have nice colorful Keyboard Shortcut guides, plus it is where the end of chapter assignments are located. Other books include the convenience of a CD, but once you break the seal - the book is yours. Therefore the download option is a little better, just be prepared to spend 20 minutes downloading all 13 chapters at ONCE.
EXTRAS
The other free resources with the book, located at the publisher's web site, are a glossaries, flashcards, and Crossword Puzzles (fun!).
