Although this work is aimed at an electrical engineering audience, the language is clear, the math isn't daunting, and the many diagrams are a great aid to understanding. Elmore's book will continue to be a bible for the relay engineer

Protective Relaying Theory and Applications, Second Edition, Revised and Expanded Free Download
I was looking for a detailed and up to date book on Protective Relaying. I'm a Ph.D EE candidate and until recently was working as a relay commissioning engineer (I got to make all this cool stuff work!)
This book did not meet my expectations.
Firstly it's not a Textbook; there are no end of chapter problems and very few worked examples.
It does cover older relays like electromechanical very well (GE, Westinghouse ect..), and gives theory behinds the elements in those relays. Which is why I would recommend this book for those who do maintenance of older relays. But as for the newer digital based relays I was very disappointed. This book is produced by ABB so when any mention of a newer relay is made all that is mentioned is an ABB relay. So you aren't getting an unbiased scientific impartial recommendation. It's more like a glossy ABB marketing brochure, and I found this very disappointing. I've commissioned ABB, SEL Basler ect.. Relays and I would have liked to have seen them all mentioned in this book. (SEL relays are so much easier to install)
Therefore I'd recommend this book for anyone who maintains electromechanical relays or is looking for a reference on relay elements and principles.
I wouldn't recommend it for someone who does new construction, or is looking for the latest in relay developments or is looking for an academic textbook.

This rather expensive book has zero redeeming qualities. Karen Wood's review suggested the book was not suitable for engineers, but that it may be useful for Electrical Technicians. It's not. I'm an Electrical Engineer looking for a good reference book on protective relaying. I want a book that will show me how do the calculations and then set a line distance relay, for example. This book can be compared to either a cheap encyclopedia or perhaps a Wikipedia entry that's undeveloped. The author appears to not know the subject very well, because he only shallowly covers his topics with no attempt to teach the reader how to actually do anything. I hate authors who are lazy and use the industries slang terms for things, expecting the reader to know what there referring too. After all, if we knew what these terms meant, we wouldn't need the book. I would love to know how to get my money back.
