In the preface of the first edition of this book, Chris Germer, Paul Fulton, and Ron Siegel write, “This book is not about anything special. It is about a simple form of awareness—mindfulness—that is available to everyone at any moment.” Indeed, Germer, Fulton, and Siegel are correct to remind us all that mindfulness, this simple form of awareness, is within our reach. In that sense, it is not “special,” or reserved for only an elite few.
While mindfulness itself is not special, I would argue that this book, particularly the 2nd edition, is quite extraordinary. Its scope is entirely unique, standing apart from any other published works in the realm of meditation and psychotherapy. Its first edition was rich and visionary, growing out of the extensive experience of the authors, in dialogue with one another and as individuals, but the 2nd edition profits from the teaching of this material to many psychotherapists in the context of a 9-month certificate course (see http://meditationandpsychotherapy.org/). As a result, the material is well taught, not just well written.
Beyond the first-rate chapters that make up the core of the book, there are several noteworthy additions to this new version:
-Lizabeth Roemer and Sue Orsillo contributed a stellar chapter on anxiety disorders. Roemer and Orsillo are well known for their empirically supported mindfulness- and acceptance-oriented treatments for anxiety disorders, having taught and published extensively on this topic for over 20 years.
- Gregory Kramer, author of Insight Dialogue, has joined Janet Surrey in writing the chapter on Relational Mindfulness.
