I've been an Adobe product user for 25 years, starting with Photoshop 1 and Illustrator 88. I'm an Adobe Certified Expert in Photoshop, and I use Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Dreamweaver, Acrobat... on an almost daily basis. I'm also an experienced instructor in all things Adobe.
This book is one of the WORST products ever released from the CIB line. One thing I've always disliked about the product line is how complicated the projects are -- they are definitely NOT for the feint of heart, stepping through several hundred steps to achieve a result. That doesn't work -- especially for beginners. I understand the need for COMPLETE training products, but users need to learn to crawl, then walk, then run, in that order. CIB products often have users sprinting before they can stand.
Frequently, tutorials are included in the books just to showcase a NEW feature or a relatively UNKNOWN feature of the software. I think these books are partially written by the marketing dept-- as an experienced user, there are things in these programs that I have never used or have no need for, but the books always include those features. I would rather see products that teach, then reinforce, the mainstream uses for the software, whether it's being used for print or web design.
Part of the problem lies in the software industry's need to continually upgrade and maintain a stream of income for the company. I get that. The problem is, the features they include in their software is not what someone would use the software for. I don't know anybody who is using InDesign to create web pages, yet they keep stuffing that kind of useless features into the software. Where does it all end?
