I believe you will increase your skill, have more fun, and do more things faster and better with your iPad if you read and practice what is in My New iPad, 3rd Edition.
I have been using my iPad for almost a year, and was surprised and pleased that Part 1: Basic Training, contained so many practical ways to work better.
I was provided a free copy for this review. I read My New iPad on my iPad, and I worked through the procedures on the same iPad. After reading "Multitasking Gestures" I was able to rapidly switch back and forth between reading 3 or 4 instructions and keying them into an application. This and book's design featuring short chunks of clear instructions made it easy and enjoyable.
I like the sensible organization of My New iPad. The 32 chapters with their listed topics makes it very easy to find what you are looking for, and to go back to practice tasks when you want to gain more proficiency. I also like the way each chapter ends with "Additional Ideas" for using what we learned.
My New iPad: 3rd Edition covers the iPad, iPad 2, and iPad 3. Since I have an iPad 2, I am not able to comment on the instructions for dictation, but the instructions worked for everything that is on my iPad 2.
The other major Parts of My New iPad are:
2. Making the Most of Your iPad,
3. Getting on the Internet,
4. Video, Music, Photos, and Ebooks,
5. Organizing Yourself, and
6: Additional Tips.
"Additional Tips" ends with Wallace Wang's recommended Best iPad Apps, and the essential Troubleshooting Your iPad.
The information is presented clearly and simply. The topics are interesting, are useful, and are likely to induce you to try new things.

The short version:
If you are new to the iPad and Apple buy this book.
It will save you immense amounts of time and frustration.
The long version:
I purchased an iPad specifically to have access to
aviation navigation applications. Among other things
I am an old computer geek having started with DOS
on a PDP-11, then UNIX and finally Windows. Along the
way I had minimal exposure to Apple products.
With a good bit of trial and error, and a few questions
to Apple knowledgeable colleagues, I was able to
get the iPad turned on, iTunes downloaded and installed
on a PC and the application I wanted to evaluate downloaded
and installed on the iPad. Then the `fun' began.
All operating systems, and user interfaces, have a basic paradigm.
The `fun' is in discovering the paradigm, accepting it, understanding it and
using it. Operating system developers generally impose a basic
paradigm on application and user interface developers. Similarly,
an author, especially of a `how to' or user manual, develops a basic
paradigm that he uses to present the material in a logical consistent
manner. In My New iPad I would characterize Wang's paradigm as
detail oriented and algorithmically based. He begins with Basic Training
e.g., how to turn on the iPad; something that is not obvious without some
instruction or a bit of luck. He continues with Parts on Making The Most of Your
iPad, Getting on the Internet, Video, Music, Photos, and Ebooks, and
finally Organizing Yourself. Each part contains four to seven chapters
detailing various actions. Each action begins with a list of what
you will be using.
