In Detail
Cinema 4D is a 3D modeling, animation, and rendering application developed by MAXON. It is becoming the most popular 3D design program in the world and learning it now will only help you become a better and more valuable designer in the 3D design industry. It is capable of procedural and polygonal sub modeling, animating, lighting, texturing, rendering, and common features found in 3D modeling applications.
This book provides all the Cinema 4D knowledge you need to become well-versed with the software in the form of short recipes, which get straight to the point about what you need to know to start designing great 3D projects.
Cinema 4D R14 Cookbook, Second Edition will guide you towards becoming an adept 3D designer, giving you all the tools to succeed in the field of 3D graphics. The book is set up to gradually introduce more sophisticated topics the deeper you go, and by the end of it you'll have a great working knowledge of the program. Early on you'll learn the basics of the program, and then jump right into how to start creating your own 3D objects to use in your designs.
Along the way you'll learn how to set up lights, cameras, and materials to turn your work into something that feels more like art and design. Towards the end of the book you will be introduced to powerful tools like Xpresso, Mograph, Particles, Sculpting, and Dynamics to take your work to the next level. You'll be impressed by how easy it is to design top quality work once you lay the foundation for the entire program through this book. By the end of this book, you'll have opened new creative doors and given yourself the opportunity to be a more successful and versatile designer.
Approach
This book is written in a Cookbook style with short recipes designed to effectively teach tools in the minimum amount of time. Each recipe hits on a topic that can be combined or incorporated with other recipes to give you the building blocks you need to start making great designs with Cinema 4D. Rather than demonstrating how to make a few specific and extensive projects, the recipes create a solid base of knowledge to help the reader understand the tools available to foster their own creativity.
Who this book is for
This book is for professional artists working in architecture, design, production, or games and wanting to use Cinema 4D to create amazing 3D graphics. It is for anyone who wants to quickly get up to speed with Cinema 4D to create 3D projects that run laps around simple 2D designs.

I was recently asked to review a new E-book that was published by Packt Publishing. I actually heard of Michael Szabo and Simon Russel before I found out they were the authors of the book and respected their work as motion graphic artists/animators/creatives. So when Packt Publishing asked me to review the book.... I said, "Hell yes!"
So to start out I will give an overall summary of the book from the perspective of a completely new artist that is interested in integrating Cinema 4D into their creative pipeline. I will then give a critical analysis of how it could help a more established artist expand on their knowledge of Cinema 4D. Finally, I will state where the book fails.
My overall opinion of this book, is that it is worth spending money to purchase. That means that the authors and Packt publishing have created a quality product that is worth you, as a consumer, spending money on. I do not recommend downloading it from a warez site or a bit torrent, the makers of this book need to be compensated. I'd be the first to tell you if it's quality is not worth financial restitution.
For the new artist looking to integrate C4D into their pipeline, be prepared to accept that the learning curve for all 3D animation application suites is pretty steep. What makes Cinema4D a great tool for the freelance artist is that the learning curve while still complex isn't as intense as say Maya. You can install it right out of the box create some primitives add some mesh deformers to your geometry and have something that you can composite into After Effects or Nuke fairly easily. It allows artists to not be bogged down with graphics related intricacy and frees them to create interesting work.
In this post I'd like to put forward my review of Packt Publishing Cinema 4D R14 Cookbook, Second Edition by Simon Russell and Michael Szabo.
I've been using Cinema 4D now for, oh, around 11 years now, and I've gone through several Cinema 4D how-to books, the manuals, and many tutorials online, paid and free. It seems as if I can never get enough of learning the depths of Cinema 4D. I do enjoy it so much.
So I was very pleased with learning more of my favorite 3D software with Cinema 4D R14 Cookbook.
I'm a slow reader, so it did take me some good amount of time to go through this, and there's some good depth in this great resource for Cinema 4D.
Firstly, I think it's very easy to read and understand and helps the beginner to get up to quick speed in learning a hearty tool like Cinema 4D.
Secondly, I'm a visual person, and I really love how the authors incorporated great visuals in the form of screenshots and icons to help the student, beginner, intermediate or advance to navigate each section. The visuals, for me help move a person along very well.
There's even some humor thrown in here and there, because every VFX artist knows that manuals can be quite boring and dry. The authors did a great job to not let this be a dry read.
I've even learned things from the Fundamentals section, even though I consider myself in the upper intermediate level to lower advanced levels.
I really enjoy modeling in 3D so I thoroughly enjoyed the "Super Modeling" section. That was a lot of help for me, and I consider myself a pretty good 3D modeler. I learned new tricks and shortcuts, which is always useful.
The layout of this book is perhaps the best I've seen.
