In Detail
Automating server tasks allows administrators to repeatedly perform the same, or similar, tasks over and over again. With PowerShell scripts, you can automate server tasks and reduce manual input, allowing you to focus on more important tasks.
Windows Server 2012 Automation with PowerShell will show several ways for a Windows administrator to automate and streamline his/her job. Learn how to automate server tasks to ease your day-to-day operations, generate performance and configuration reports, and troubleshoot and resolve critical problems.
Windows Server 2012 Automation with PowerShell will introduce you to the advantages of using Windows Server 2012 and PowerShell. Each recipe is a building block that can easily be combined to provide larger and more useful scripts to automate your systems. The recipes are packed with examples and real world experience to make the job of managing and administrating Windows servers easier.
The book begins with automation of common Windows Networking components such as AD, DHCP, DNS, and PKI, managing Hyper-V, and backing up the server environment. By the end of the book you will be able to use PowerShell scripts to automate tasks such as performance monitoring, reporting, analyzing the environment to match best practices, and troubleshooting.

The first chapter of this book starts off with a brief overview of PowerShell scripting. It's a nice overview/refresher of scripting techniques (writing functions/modules, security and code signing, data validation and passing variables, etc), but the way it's written it definitely assumes you're already familiar with the language. If you just need to brush up or get a quick primer on some of these topics, it works well for that use. If you expect it to teach you PowerShell, you'll probably end up disappointed and confused.
The remaining chapters each focus on a particular 'area of emphasis' and provide a series of recipes on different tasks related to that topic. For example, Chapter 2 is titled "Managing Windows Network Services with PowerShell", and covers configuring a server for static networking, and deploying a basic Active Directory infrastructure with domain controllers, DNS, DHCP, PKI, as well as creating user accounts and reporting on users and computers. Combine this with the information on Hyper-V in Chapter 4 and you should be well on your way to having a set of scripts to automatically build and deploy a virtual test environment.
The remaining chapters follow the same format, and cover IIS, storage, network shares, WSUS, printing, troubleshooting, performance, inventorying your servers, and backing up your servers. One of the things I really like about this book is how each recipe is formatted. Each recipe is subdivided into three sections:
1) Provides a quick overview of the task at hand as well as any specific infrastructure/environment requirements or assumptions that are used.
